A few years ago, I made my older daughter a poncho, and we both really liked how it came out, so the design went on my list of patterns to write. This is that pattern. It's designed to fit a preteen girl. The measurement from the neck edge down the arm is about 18 inches.
While the shape is a classic, two-rectangle poncho, the construction is modular, meaning there's no sewing. Since the whole thing starts with foundation double crochet, there's also no hard chain edge to deal with.
The four-row pattern stitch repeat is my favorite for crocheting garments, as it is visually interesting without being overwhelming and warm without being heavy or dense. When combined with striping three colors, including one that's variegated, you get a striping pattern that looks more complicated than it is.
The poncho is made in worsted weight yarn, using a US size H (5 mm) hook. The yarns used in the sample were Berroco's Vintage for the solid colors and Malabrigo's Rios for the variegated. Any yarn with a similar gauge will work.
