Splitting Yarn

Dividing a ball of really thick yarn into two balls of thinner yarn Sometimes a yarn comes along in a perfect color, but it's just too thick. Many yarns are available in worsted weight in colors not available in thinner weights. Crochet works up thicker than knitting, so thinner yarns can work better for crocheted fabrics. Lion Brand Thick & Quick: split on left with L/8mm hook whole on right with P/11.5mm hook Sometimes yarn has been doubled for a project, and now that the project is over, it would be nice for the remainder to be split back into its parts. Sometimes there isn't enough of a yarn to make something, but there would be enough if the yarn were thinner. Splitting, or unplying, yarn takes a little time, but it isn't hard. People who know about spinning may gasp a bit at this exercise in going backward. Unplying yarn results in yarn that is structurally different from what you started with, so the fabric you make out of it will be a bi...

Free Pattern! Knitted Kids' Mittens and Fingerless Mitts

Here's a fast and easy pattern for mittens or fingerless mitts to fit the 3-6 year old set. This is a perfect last-minute gift or charity project. These mitts and mittens work up really fast, because they are made with worsted weight yarn, on size 7 needles, and there are no fancy stitches or fiddly shaping. Since they are sized for small children, I've included a built in cord to connect the mittens to each other (That's something you can do with any mitten pattern!). There's also minimal distinction between the cuff and the palm, meaning that the mittens can grow with the child for a little while. No yardage requirements are given in the pattern, because there are too many variables to take into consideration. That said, these mitts and mittens use very little yarn. The mittens I made for my 3yo (the red ones in the picture) took less than 100 yards. I also made a pair of striped fingerless mitts for my 6yo (not pictured) that used up little bits a...

Folded Cuffs in Knitting

Do you want to make baby socks that stay on? Do you want the benefits of ribbing without the appearance of it? Do you want ribbing that doesn't stretch out of shape? Years ago, I followed a vintage glove pattern. In it, you made the ribbed cuff, then worked one round of eyelets (*k2tog, yo* all the way around), and then worked the same number of rounds as the ribbing in stockinette. When finishing the glove, you folded the ribbing inside the stockinette along the eyelet round, and tacked down the ribbing so it couldn't unfold. Eyelet folded cuff on a baby sock The purpose of all that hullabaloo in that pattern was to hide the ribbing while creating an attractive scalloped edge on the cuffs of the gloves, which is what *k2tog, yo* around looks like when folded in half. However, I've found since then, that the technique has practical purposes that more than justify the effort. Containing ribbing with your pattern stitch, whether it's stockinette or not, limits...
