We've written here before about bag stitch. It's a combination of single crochet and chain stitch that produces a very dense fabric that's really good for making bags, hence the name. In addition to being dense, it doesn't stretch the way straight single crochet does, and you don't have to work tightly to make it work. Because of how the stitches line up, however, it also is fun to work in multiple colors, because it creates different effects depending on how many rows you work in each color.
Practical Crocheter played around with different striping patterns with her Faux Colorwork Bag. But what if you used a much bigger hook than the yarn called for to create a wearable fabric for a hat? That's what I've done in Longitude. This watch cap is made in sport weight yarn, with a size I (5.5 mm) hook. The striping pattern on the brim creates spots, and the (horizontal) striping on the body of the hat makes vertical stripes.
The finished hat fits an adult woman, but it is not elastic. If you want a hat that fits a bigger head, you will need bigger yarn and hook or more stitches.
