Shop Review! The McKinney Knittery

About a month ago, my husband and I enjoyed a weekend together in Dallas. Sadly, I didn't have a chance to visit Knit Dallas again, but we did take a slight detour on our way home to visit The McKinney Knittery. The McKinney Knittery is a boutique yarn store located (as the name suggests) in the historic district of McKinney, Texas.

With high ceilings and plenty of natural light, the Knittery has an open, airy atmosphere, despite having fully stocked shelves filling much of the space and all the walls. On entering, the half of the store to the left is dedicated to yarn, and the half on the right is mostly fabric, although some yarn and most of the stores knitting accessories are also on that side, and they also carry embroidery and cross stitch supplies.

On the day I visited, there happened to be some kind of event in McKinney's historic district. There was a lot of foot traffic and not much parking, which is always good news for small businesses, and the Knittery is no exception. They were very busy that day, but multiple employees still made a point of greeting me and asking if I needed help. The woman who rang up my purchases even took the time to make a little conversation.

As I would expect of a yarn store in a higher end area, most of the yarn was also higher end. They have a broad selection of hand-dyed yarns, especially sock yarn, and a surprising selection of non-superwash wools in a variety of weights and textures. They also carry a broad variety of lace weight mohair from multiple dyers. In every yarn I looked at, they stocked an impressive variety of colors, and despite the sheer quantity of their stock, each display was clearly labeled with yarn information and price.

For those with more practical tastes and budgets, they also carry Berroco's Vintage, which is a really enjoyable yarn to work with, a few options from Cascade, and a few lines from Malabrigo. Their cotton selection was also both impressive and well-priced.

I purchased a fingering weight cotton from Sandnes Garn, called Mandarin Petit, for a baby bib pattern I have in mind, some Berroco Vintage and coordinating Malabrigo Rios for a poncho for my daughter, a skein of Honey Hill Yarn Favorite Sock for a sock pattern I have saved on Ravelry, and a set of dpns I'll need for an upcoming personal project.

Honey Hill is a hand dye line owned by the Knittery's owner and is only available there. Sadly, the skeins are not labeled with names or numbers identifying the colorway, but the colors really are gorgeous. The one I bought was a tonal light rose color.

I really enjoyed visiting the McKinney Knittery, and I look forward to visiting again, although I don't go to the Dallas area often.
