New Pattern! Rippled Waffles Baby Blanket (Crochet)

Over the last several years, I've played a lot with waffle stitch. I figured out how to work it in the round, first with the Wagon Wheel Potholder, and then with the top-down Waffle Stitch Hat and the Round Waffle Stitch Baby Blanket. Then I worked on decreasing in waffle stitch with the Bottoms Up Waffle Stitch Hat

Having gotten the hang of increasing and decreasing in pattern, figuring out a waffle stitch chevron blanket seemed the logical next step, and the Chevron Waffle Stitch Cowl was born. However, the cowl was really a prototype on my way to making this baby blanket.

The Rippled Waffles Baby Blanket is made in aran weight yarn and a size J (6 mm) hook, making a for a delightfully thick and squishy blanket, perfect for staying cozy on a cold day. Waffle stitch, however it's worked, is also pretty heavy, so this is also a good blanket for putting under your baby during tummy time or for somewhat older kids hosting picnics and tea parties.

The increases and decreases are worked in pattern, with a vertical line running through them to create some more visual interest. I also love how angling waffle stitch diagonally turns it into a lattice. This version of waffle stitch isn't reversible, but both sides of this 2-row repeat are attractive.

The increases and decreases are specialized for the pattern stitch, but not as tricky as the increases in the Round Waffle Stitch Baby Blanket (this link is to the British version). If you are comfortable with front and back post double crochet, especially if you have done some fancy blanket squares using variations on those stitches, you should be able to get the hang of them without much difficulty. The blanket also starts with foundation double crochet and ends with crab stitch. Directions are provided for all special stitches used.

As baby blankets go, this one is a bit on the small side. That's partially to make it more convenient to use in strollers and carseats, but also because waffle stitch is heavy and really eats up yarn. A bigger Blanket would simply have been too heavy.
