I've recently been spending some time in the Oklahoma City area, and I've used the opportunity to visit the yarn stores in the region. The first LYS I visited was Little Tabby Yarns in Moore, OK, just south of OKC.
Located in a quiet corner of a strip mall just off the freeway, Little Tabby Yarn is easy to find and has plenty of parking. It also happens to be right around the corner (as in, in the same building) with a great Indian restaurant, where I enjoyed lunch. The shop itself has beautiful natural light and is big enough to house a good selection of yarn without feeling cluttered. In addition to yarn and notions, it has a comfortable sitting area in the middle of the store and a large table, perfect for classes and troubleshooting, off to the side of the register.
Little Tabby offers a wide variety of wools and wool blends, both hand wash and superwash, in every weight and an array of colors, along with a broader selection of cottons than I expected. I went specifically looking for lighter weight, non-superwash wool for an upcoming felting project, and was very pleased to find an entire rainbow of Jameison & Smith 2-ply wool. This yarn is intended for stranded knitting and is sold in 25-gram skeins, which is exactly what I need.
I was also pleased to find a good selection of yarns from various hand-dyers located in Oklahoma. I bought a lovely skein of sock yarn from RW Custom Yarn (you can find their FB page here), which is located in Osage County, OK. At Little Tabby, the local dyers have their own section and are clearly identified, which was good to see.
Little Tabby Yarn is owned by Virginia Annest, and she and one other person were working the day I was there. They are friendly, helpful without hovering, and easy to chat with. And since this is the twenty-first century, when they heard I was from out of town, they made sure to let me know I can always order through the website.
I think I spent about an hour there, and I really enjoyed it. I definitely plan to visit again.
