Are you doing magic circle or dpn"s. I've just learned to knit on those the last few years. Do you knit socks? They look so fun to do, but I've never completely accomplished a pair. I have turned the heel and moved on, but then I lost stitch count and I had forgotten to put in a life line and not good at corrections so I just ripped back. @Peabea I do make socks, and while I have used the magic circle, I prefer dpns. I learned to knit on double points, so they are comfortable for me.
I have a post on basic sock math at the link below. I would suggest starting with a basic sock pattern (no interesting pattern stitches) using thicker yarn that works up faster and is easier to see. Socks for babies are especially fun for getting started and make great gifts or donations.
