Free Pattern! Lacy Maple Leaf (Crochet)

I've been knitting and crocheting a bunch of leaves an fruits for a special project I have going (I'll be posting about that soon!). If you follow this blog, you've seen them in my last few Wordless WIP Wednesdays. I've been making them from embroidery floss, using up a whole grocery sack full that a friend gave me a couple years ago.

The thing about 6-strand embroidery floss, is that it comes in hanks of just 8.75 yards. Now for the larger fruits I've made, I've just planned on using two or three hanks per item. Leaves, however are pretty small. I found two maple leaf patterns and one oak leaf pattern on Ravelry (all free patterns).

Those patterns are great, and I enjoyed making them. The first maple leaf pattern is just three rounds, and it is perfect to make in green and use as grape or pumpkin leaves. However, it's a bit small for the overall project. The second pattern is also a good pattern, and it's four rounds, making it a better size for my larger project. However, it uses a full hank of embroidery floss, with nothing leftover. That would normally be fine, but I don't want to be in a position where I have to start a new hank of floss for just the last two or three stitches of the project, so I set about making a version that uses less yardage.

Despite being five rounds, this Lacy Maple Leaf I came up with only uses about 3/4 of a hank of embroidery floss, and is about 2.5 inches from point to point, making it perfect for my project (yardage will vary depending on your gauge, so plan accordingly). I also tried it out in worsted weight cotton, which made a cute coaster, about 5 inches across, perfect for autumn decor. Then I made it in size 20 crochet thread, and those came out about an inch across, and made a really cute pair of earrings, although I could see using the motif to make other jewelry or an applique. So here's the free pattern!
