I've been knitting and crocheting a bunch of leaves an fruits for a special project I have going (I'll be posting about that soon!). If you follow this blog, you've seen them in my last few Wordless WIP Wednesdays. I've been making them from embroidery floss, using up a whole grocery sack full that a friend gave me a couple years ago.
The thing about 6-strand embroidery floss, is that it comes in hanks of just 8.75 yards. Now for the larger fruits I've made, I've just planned on using two or three hanks per item. Leaves, however are pretty small. I found two maple leaf patterns and one oak leaf pattern on Ravelry (all free patterns).
Those patterns are great, and I enjoyed making them. The first maple leaf pattern is just three rounds, and it is perfect to make in green and use as grape or pumpkin leaves. However, it's a bit small for the overall project. The second pattern is also a good pattern, and it's four rounds, making it a better size for my larger project. However, it uses a full hank of embroidery floss, with nothing leftover. That would normally be fine, but I don't want to be in a position where I have to start a new hank of floss for just the last two or three stitches of the project, so I set about making a version that uses less yardage.
