Splitting Yarn

Dividing a ball of really thick yarn into two balls of thinner yarn Sometimes a yarn comes along in a perfect color, but it's just too thick. Many yarns are available in worsted weight in colors not available in thinner weights. Crochet works up thicker than knitting, so thinner yarns can work better for crocheted fabrics. For the last couple of years, I’ve made dishcloths to donate to my local food pantry, and I try to drop off my donation in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving. I donate through the Each Stitch Counts project, and each dishcloth is donated with a bottle of dish soap. This year, I’ve been using these patterns centered on half double crochet. Each dishcloth calls for worsted weight cotton and a size H hook. All the examples in the picture below were made in Lily's Peaches 'N Cream. Free Pattern! Knitted Kids' Mittens and Fingerless Mitts

Here's a fast and easy pattern for mittens or fingerless mitts to fit the 3-6 year old set. This is a perfect last-minute gift or charity project. These mitts and mittens work up really fast, because they are made with worsted weight yarn, on size 7 needles, and there are no fancy stitches or fiddly shaping. Since they are sized for small children, I've included a built in cord to connect the mittens to each other (That's something you can do with any mitten pattern!). There's also minimal distinction between the cuff and the palm, meaning that the mittens can grow with the child for a little while. No yardage requirements are given in the pattern, because there are too many variables to take into consideration. That said, these mitts and mittens use very little yarn.
